Peak foliage varies by region and shifts slightly each year based on summer rainfall, September temperatures, and storm activity. Ideal conditions require adequate summer moisture (without drought), warm sunny September days, and cool nights of 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. Heavy rain or wind can strip peak foliage in 24 to 48 hours, so flexibility is key.
As a general rule:
Late September to early October: Northern Vermont, Northern New Hampshire, Northern and Western Maine
Early to mid October: Central Vermont, White Mountains, Acadia, Berkshires
Mid to late October: Southern Vermont, Hudson Valley, Litchfield Hills, Cape Cod

Peak-weekend bookings at popular inns and properties should be made three to six months ahead. The most sought-after Virtuoso properties, Twin Farms, the Pitcher Inn, Lake Kora - have very limited inventory and sell out quickly for fall dates.
Travel Midweek
Tuesday through Thursday travel offers dramatically less traffic, better availability, and prices 20 to 30 percent lower than peak weekends. On the Kancamagus Highway, a drive that should take one hour can take three on a peak Saturday.
Pack in Layers
October mornings in the Northeast run 35 to 45 degrees Fahrenheit, afternoons reach 55 to 65 degrees, and evenings cool quickly. Bring a rain jacket, October rain is common and can be cold, and hiking shoes, as the best foliage views are from mountain overlooks with wet, muddy trails.
